Hi guys,
My name is Altered State and I am not going to be your teacher, I am going to be kind of a mentor.
With this thread, I’m not going to teach you English, but I am going to establish some rules you will have to ***ow if you want to learn this language.
NOTE: The most of these guidelines may be used to learn any language on Earth, but I can just guarantee that they work with English, because it is the only one I tried them out with.
DISCLAIMER:
This is not a goddamn course like the 92489284 that you can find on the Internet, on TV or in a fucking book that promises you gonna speak English in some months reading some grammar and repeating over and over a truckload of structures or senseless sentences.
This thread is reality. People think that going to the fucking “EOI” for 5 years is the only and easiest way to learn a language. A few days ago I talked to an old friend that had just finished his last course at the “EOI”, and, oh boy, he couldn’t even have a real conversation with me in English. He just wasted about 3 hours a week for 5 years for almost nothing.
First of all, who the hell do I think I am to talk as if I had the languages philosopher’ stone?
This question has a simple answer. I am someone that has learned by myself, without any academy or book, in just 6 months, enough English to speak (and, of course, understand) to any British or American person. About 6 months ago I had an English level such like the “ESO” one.
Of course, I am not especially good at languages. I just think that anyone can do it the same I did.
And I am not an English expert also. You can learn enough English to handle any conversation with a native, but from that, the only thing to do is to practice and improve your skills.
So now you are informed about who I am and who I am not. I can teach you how to get as skilled as I am, but I’m not going to be able to improve your English to a proficiency level. As you can (or at least you will be able to) see, I make good few mistakes, but that is not the point, we are not here to pass any stupid certificate, we are here to learn real English as soon as we can afford.
That all said, we can move on to some other questions I consider I ought to answer, FAQ:
- Why in this forum?
I’m totally “newfag” here in this forum, but I think it’s one of the most that contains a good amount of people that may be interested in the information I’m going to share.
- Why this section?
Well, I think it is the only one this thread actually fits in.
- What do you think about “EOI” and English academies in general?
I’m going to be clear. I think them all suck. Too many years are not worth it at all since you can learn the same by yourself and for free.
- What do you think about certificates?
I think they are quite useless. Yes, I know certificates are needed to study some master’s degree, but…
If we talk about tourism, traveling, or the most important one, labor market, certificates are totally useless.
If you go to a job interview and they need you to know any language, they will do the interview in English and that’s all, no matter how many certificates you have, if you can talk in English, you will get the job, if you cannot, you will not.
We can finally start NOW.
So, what is the big secret?
It is very simple: You need to expend at least 30 minutes every single day over the next 12 months with English and you will be writing/reading/speaking/understanding English at least as well as I do.
And is that all? YES, that’s all. But you can’t take it lightly. When I say EVERY SINGLE DAY, I absolutely miccionan EVERY SINGLE DAY. If you fail any single day, you’re dead. Come rain or shine. Even if you think you can’t, you will practice anyway. Any loser excuse is not accepted. Because I don’t like losers, I am not here to help any loser. If you consider yourself a loser that cant expend at least 30 minutes of his life to learn a language, you can stop reading and get the fuck out of this thread. And you should also start to practice washing dishes.
“When should I start? Next month? Next week? Tomorrow?” You should NEVER start. If you are not starting TODAY, you better get out of this thread, because you won’t be able to finish the training.
And what should I expend my “English time” in?
You can do so many things.
You can read English books or newspapers, hear to any English radio, or download any course like Vaughan or Rosetta Stone.
The most important thing is listen, listen, listen. You need to train your ear. That is the most important thing you want to focus on.
I highly recommend you to download any series you like in original version. In the first 6 month you are going to need English subtitles (DO NOT EVER USE SPANISH SUBTITLES).
I personally recommend Lost, Breaking Bad or Twin Peaks.
I’m currently watching South Park, you can do it online right here: Full Episode Player - South Park Studios (With english subtitles or not).
And you can download any TV series here: Download music, movies, games, software! The Pirate Bay - The galaxy's most resilient BitTorrent site
And subtitles: Addic7ed.com - The source of latest TV subtitles
If you can expend 20 minutes with any English audio-course and other 40 minutes watching any TV series a day, it would be very nice.
Obviously, the more time you expend, the faster you will learn. And it’s for that I recommend that, from now, you ought to do the most things you can do in English. I miccionan things like watching films, looking for information on the internet, playing videogames, reading books… Everything you can do in English you should.
I want to finish this post with some RULES:
- In this thread we speak in English. If you need to write something in Spanish or another language, please, use that “spoilers” stuff.
- I’m here to explain or answer to questions about the learning methods. Of course I will solve doubts about the language, but, as I said, I’m not an expert, I also in this thread to practice and improve my English, and it’s for that I need every English speaker in this forum to join us and help us to solve any doubts that we may have.
- I need everyone to correct everyone. This is teamwork.
- The main topic in this thread is learning English, but we can talk about anything to practice the language,
I will update tomorrow with material and contents.
Greetings.
