The stars of 1968 Hollywood film Romeo and Juliet have sued Paramount Pictures for more than $500 million after alleging they were tricked into appearing in a nude scene as teenagers.
Olivia Hussey, 71, and Leonard Whiting, 72, filed a claim in a Los Angeles court alleging sensual abuse, sensual harassment and fraud.
The lawsuit states that Hussey, who was then 15, and Whiting, then 16, were duped by the director Franco Zeffirelli and filmed nude without their knowledge in violation of California and federal laws against indecency and the exploitation of children.
Zeffirelli, who died in 2019, is said to have told the British actors they could wear flesh-coloured undergarments for a bedroom scene that appears late in the movie.
However on the morning of the shoot the Italian filmmaker allegedly told Hussey, who played Juliet and Whiting, who played Romeo, that they would only wear body make-up.
According to the lawsuit Zeffirelli assured the actors that the camera would be positioned so that it would not capture nudity.
Zeffirelli told them they must act in the nude “or the picture would fail” and their careers would be hurt, the lawsuit states. They “believed they had no choice but to act in the nude in body make-up as demanded”.
Whiting’s bare buttocks and Hussey’s bare breasts are briefly shown during the scene.
The actors have suffered emotional damage and mental anguish for decades as a result of appearing nude, according to the lawsuit, while both have allegedly missed out on job opportunities.
Their lawyers argue that given their suffering and the revenue brought in by the film since its release, Hussey and Whiting are entitled to damages of more than $500 million.
Romeo and Juliet was a critical and commercial success upon release and was nominated for the best picture Oscar as well as earning Zeffirelli a best director nod.
It won Oscars for its cinematography and costume design.
Hussey defended the nude scene in a 2018 interview with Variety. “Nobody my age had done that before,” she said, adding that Zeffirelli shot it tastefully. “It was needed for the film.”
