Nvidia says GTA5 on PC this autumn

Grand Theft Auto 5 is coming to PC, according to loose-lips Nvidia, and is due alongside the console versions this autumn.

"[PC] gamers are preparing their systems for a strong roster of games coming this fall, including blockbuster franchises such as Call of Duty: Ghosts, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Assassin's Creed 4," said Chris Evenden, senior director of investor relations, during a financial call last week (tras*cript by Seeking Alpha).

How much Nvidia knows for certain is unclear, but it works closely with companies making big games to ensure tailored graphics drivers are ready when those games launch.

Should Grand Theft Auto 5 arrive on PC at roughly the same time as consoles, it will be a turn up for the books. Grand Theft Auto 4 took more than half-a-year to land on PC, and Red Dead Redemption skipped a PC version altogether.

Rockstar's PC fans felt concerned enough about GTA5 perhaps not materialising on PC that they took to petition site Change.org in their hundreds of thousands - 315,031 - to petition Rockstar to bring the game to PC.

We're ***owing this matter up with NVIDA. Rockstar hasn't said anything on the matter yet.

Grand Theft Auto is due out here on PS3 and Xbox 360 17th September.

AMD Hawaii GPU to undercut Nvidia's GTX 780 - report

If all the rumours surrounding AMD’s new line of graphics cards are to be believed, this Q4 is going to be a bloodbath in the graphics card sector.

Fudzilla reports that AMD’s new Hawaii GPU, which AMD last week confirmed it will be unveiling in September, will retail for a maximum of $600 and quite possibly less.

This means it will undercut Nvidia’s mighty GTX 780, which currently retails for around $650. It will also significantly undercut the $1,000 GTX Titan, but then so does a second hand Volkswagen Polo.

AMD last week slashed the price of its Radeon 7990 to around $699. With Hawaii unlikely to match the 7990 in raw performance terms, a $600 RRP seems to set up AMD’s new GPU line-up nicely.

The question now is how Hawaii will compare in performance terms to the GTX 780. The internet would have you believe it will have the better of Nvidia’s card, but with no firm numbers to call upon that remains nothing but speculation for the time being.

If Hawaii can get close to or beat the GTX 780 then the lower price, coupled with AMD’s aggressive game bundling, could leave Nvidia in a tricky position.

Xbox One Controller to Hit Windows PC in 2014

A Microsoft spokesperson recently told CVG that the Xbox One controller shipping with the console this holiday season will eventually be compatible with Windows PC in 2014. This will be accomplished by a Microsoft-developed driver, and will supposedly allow the new controller to work with PC games that already support the current Xbox 360 controller for Windows.

"The Xbox One controller, although it looks similar in many ways, shares no underlying technology with the current Xbox 360 controller," the rep said. "New wireless protocol, combined with the ability to work in 'wired' mode, and the addition of antiestéticatures like Impulse triggers, means that new software has to be written and optimized for the PC."

The rep went on to explain that, as previously mentioned, there will also need to be work done to make sure that the existing PC games supporting the Xbox 360 controller will work with the new one. "While it seems trivial, it's actually quite a bit of dedicated work for all that to be seamless for the user," the rep said. "We know people want to use the Xbox One controller on their PC, and we do too -- we expect to have the functionality available in 2014."

The news ***ows an interview CVG conducted with Xbox Accessories general manager Zulfi Alam who talked about the history of the upcoming Xbox One controller. He admitted that he received "atrocious" feedback from Microsoft executives when he first approached them with an idea to completely redesign the controller back in early 2011. They called the idea "crazy."

But he moved forward with the project anyway. "We interviewed hundreds and hundreds of core gamers, and through those interviews we got a list of improvements that people said they wanted," he said. "Then we added each one of those advancements to the Xbox 360 controller, and each time we tested the new builds on live games. In fact, we were writing actual levels of games to see how well a new antiestéticature works."

Gamers testing the Xbox 360 controllers had no idea they were holding what would eventually be the foundation of the Xbox One version -- the team merely made slight adjustments to the current model during each testing session. "The final Xbox One controller may not look different on the outside, but inside it's remarkably different," Alam said.

Microsoft reportedly spent more than $100 million designing the new Xbox One controller. The company will likely get that back in 24 hours of the new console's availability on the market this holiday season.
