Unearthed documents show that the drug company Bayer sold millions of dollars worth of an intravenous blood-clotting medicine -- Factor VIII concentrate, intended for hemophiliacs -- to Asian, Latin American, and some European countries in the mid-1980s, although they knew that it was tainted with AIDS. Bayer knew about the fact that the drug was tainted and told the FDA to keep things under wraps while they made a profit off of a drug that infected its patients. If these allegations are true, then both Bayer and the FDA are at fault for this catastrophe. FDA regulators helped to keep the continued sales ******, asking the company that the problem be ''quietly solved without alerting the Congress, the medical community and the public,'' according to the minutes of a 1985 meeting.

Dándolo todo por cierto, la noticia dice que lo vendieron a mediados de los 80 (no sé si puedes recordar que en aquellos momentos el sida era una cosa muy extraña que no se sabía cómo se infectaba). Además, el producto era factor VIII, y el VIH no sobreviviría en él fuera del cuerpo ni un día. Muchos hemofílicos sí contrajeron VIH en los 80, porque se les hacían tras*fusiones sin posibilidad de saber si estaban o no infectadas.

Aunque ahora suene a conspiración, cualquier noticia acerca del sida en los 80 generaba pánico. Decir que un producto hospitalario podía ir contaminado por VIH habría hecho que nadie se quisiese acercar a un Hospital. Recuerdo que no se sabía si el VIH era tras*misible por mosquitos, o por un estornudo. Para mí entra dentro de la lógica haber mantenido la alerta callada mientras se investigaba. Lo peor: que se siguiese vendiendo fuera de USA. Aunque la alternativa para muchos hemofílicos sería haberse muerto desangrados, no mucho mejor que el riesgo de contraer la enfermedad.
