Caroline Ellison receives lighter sentence for role in FTX collapse

Former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison has received a two-year sentence in a minimum security prison for her role in FTX’s demise.

The sentence was handed down by Judge Lewis Kaplan in the District Court of New York. As part of the sentence, Ellison must forfeit the roughly $11 billion fortune she earned while employed at the FTX sister company.

“You’re a very strong person, Ms. Ellison, in some ways, but not inviolable. Mr. Bankman-Fried had your Kryptonite. […] You were vulnerable and you were exploited,” said Kaplan.

As Cointelegraph reported, Ellison’s lenient sentence was expected after US attorneys informed Judge Kaplan of her “extraordinary cooperation” in the prosecution of former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried.

“Ellison played a core role in Bankman-Fried’s criminal schemes, but as the Government noted in Bankman-Fried’s sentencing submission, only he was involved in all aspects of the schemes,” the attorneys said in a Sept. 17 filing.
