It is with incredible sadness that we share the news that Joshua Mark Mayers was killed in action, on November 10, 2023, at age 34, while serving as a medic with the Ukrainian military.

Josh was born in 1989, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, but grew up in Edmonton, Alberta. He is survived by his wife, Cathryn; mother, Janet (Pete); father, Irv (Nicole); sister, Gill; his brother, Matt (Karen); as well as numerous relatives and friends.

From a young age, Josh dedicated his life to helping people. First working as a lifeguard, transitioning to a Primary Care Paramedic, and finally an Advanced Care Paramedic. Josh cared deeply about everyone in his life, as well as strangers in the community.

After working for Alberta Health Services for nearly ten years, Josh felt he was no longer doing enough to help people in the way that he wanted to and was inspired by the ongoing war in Ukraine. He felt this would bring a higher purpose to his life and provide him with a chance to make a significant and meaningful difference in the world. With love from his wife, family, and friends, Josh left for Ukraine in September 2023.

The family will be hosting a Celebration of Life on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Polish Hall (10960 104 Street, Edmonton). Parking is limited, so please try to carpool. As per Josh’s wishes, he wanted a casual dress code, with no uniform dress and no honour guard. All his colleagues, coworkers, supervisors, and road crew from work are welcome. There will be an open mic for anyone interested in sharing a memory or story.
