RUSSIA'S SPECIAL WEAPON AGAINST ISIS
The Rostov-on-Don Submarine is a model believed to be one of the quietest in the world - making it excellent in stealth operations.
The sub is armed with 533mm torpedoes and Kalibr-PL (submarine modification) water-to-surface cruise missiles.
Weighing some 4,000 tons the Rostov-on-Don can reach underwater speeds of 20 knots (23mph) and can dive to a depth of almost 1,000ft.
NATO has called this type of submarine a 'black hole' for its ability to remain undetected.
It usually has a crew of over 50, and can spend around 40 days at sea before it needs to return to port for refuel and supplies.

This incredible footage shows the moment Russia stepped up its aerial attacks on ISIS targets in Syria with cruise missiles fired from a submarine in the Mediterranean for the first time.
Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu confirmed the strikes had been launched on the country in such a way, progressing on from firing from warships the Caspian Sea.
'We used Calibre cruise missiles from the Rostov-on-Don submarine from the Mediterranean Sea,' Shoigu told President Vladimir pilinguin during an encounter broadcast on state television
--------------
It is believed the cruise missiles can travel as far as 1,500 miles at low altitude to attack enemy strongholds.
Shoigu added that Russian strikes launched on Tuesday had been aimed at 'two terrorist strongholds' around Raqa, the de facto Syrian capital of the Islamic State jihadist group.
---------------
'As a result of the successful launches by the aviation and submarine fleet, all targets were destroyed,' Shoigu said, adding that oil infrastructure, ammunition depots and a mine-making factory had been hit in the strikes
--------------------------
'The Calibre cruise missile once again showed its effectiveness over long distances.'
Moscow is flexing its military muscle with the latest submarine strikes after having previously fired missiles from warships in the Caspian Sea.
An unnamed source told Interfax news agency earlier Tuesday that a Russian submarine was approaching Syria's Mediterranean coast to launch cruise missiles toward to war-torn country.
President Vladimir pilinguin said Tuesday that the Caliber cruise missiles launched from the submarine could be equipped with nuclear warheads but said he hoped they would 'never be needed in the fight against terrorism'.
Shoigu said Moscow had warned Israel and the United States - conducting their own bombing campaigns in Syria - that the Russian military would be conducting the submarine strikes.
Shoigu added that Russian military jets had conducted 600 combat sorties and destroyed '300 targets of different kinds' in the past three days.
Meanwhile it has emerged the number of foreign fighters joining ISIS and other extremist groups in Iraq and Syria has more than doubled since last year to at least 27,000, a report by an intelligence consultancy has revealed.
---------------
The figures, compiled by The Soufan Group, indicate that efforts by countries around the world to stem the flow of foreign fighters to the region and blunt the appeal of violent organisations appear to have made little impact.
'The foreign fighter phenomenon in Iraq and Syria is truly global,' the New York-based security consultancy's report said.
'The Islamic State has seen success beyond the dreams of other terrorist groups that now appear conventional and even old-fashioned, such as Al Qaeda.
'It has energised tens of thousands of people to join it, and inspired many more to support it.'

Russia’s stealth ‘black hole’ submarine prepares for 4,000km trip, deep water trials
Published time: 8 Jan, 2015 18:33Edited time: 10 Jan, 2015 13:25
A new Russian advanced stealth submarine, dubbed a “black hole” by NATO for its ability to be undetectable, has begun preparations for deep water tests. However, it must first make a 4,630km journey to the Barents Sea in Russia's north.
"The crew of the electric diesel submarine Rostov on Don which was handed to the Russian Navy by Admiralty Shipyards has started the preparation for the passing from the Baltic Sea zone to the Barents Sea,” Captain Igor Dygalo from the Ministry of Defense said.
Before the submarine begins its test operations, it must travel about 2,500 nautical miles (4,630 km) from St. Petersburg to the Barents Sea in Russia's north. After finishing all scheduled tests, the submarine will travel to its future permanent place of service in the Novorossiysk port in the Black Sea. It is the second submarine out of six planned for the Black Sea Fleet by the end of 2016.

Known as 'Improved Kilo' under NATO code name, Rostov on Don is the first trade-off model of the third generation submarines of the Varshavyanka class (Project 636) underwater ship. The diesel-electric stealth sub is believed to be the quietest in the world. It also possesses an extended combat range, and its relatively small size helps it maneuver in shallow waters.
The sub carries 533 mm torpedoes and eight surface-to-air missiles, in addition to a new Caliber land attack cruise missile complex. Its tonnage is 4,000 tons; its underwater speed reaches 40 knots (37 km per hour), and its maximal submission is 300 meters. Its crew consists of 52 persons and it can fulfill its duty autonomously for 45 days.
NATO has called this type of submarine a “black hole” for its ability to remain undetected.
The new submarine, along with other vessels from the Project 636 class, is mainly intended for anti-shipping and anti-submarine missions in relatively shallow waters. It can strike surface, underwater, and land targets. The Varshavyanka class subs will be tasked with patrolling Russia’s maritime borders and protecting Black Sea coastal territories.
The submarine construction started in November 2011 in Admiralty Shipyards in Saint Petersburg, and finished at the end of 2014. It is named after the city of Rostov-on-Don in Russia’s south.
