Two Georgian volunteer fighters killed in Ukraine (ukrinform.net)
Malkhaz Kvizhinadze and Joni Odishvili, veterans of the Russian-Georgian war of 2008 who were fighting alongside Ukrainian forces, have been killed in Ukraine.
Andriy Yermak, chief of President Volodymyr Zelensky's office, announced this on Telegram, Ukrinform reports.
"Unfortunately, war is losses. We are losing our heroes, as well as volunteer fighters who are fighting for Ukraine against Russian evil. Such were the veterans of the Russian-Georgian war of 2008, Malkhaz Kvizhinadze and Joni Odishvili," Yermak said.
Odishvili died near Bakhmut and Kvizhinadze in the Luhansk region. The plane with the bodies of the victims arrived in Georgia, where the heroes will be buried, Yermak said. He also expressed his condolences.
Odishvili sustained severe shrapnel wounds to the head near the city of Bakhmut, and doctors failed to save his life in hospital.
The total number of Georgians who have been killed in the ranks of the Ukrainian Defence Forces is close to 50. The Georgian media include both those who arrived from Georgia during the full-scale war and ethnic Georgians who had lived in Ukraine for a long time beforehand.
